How To Get The Most From Cedar Decking

Cedar decking has become increasingly popular in recent years. This is hardly surprising when you consider the history which this wood has, and its ability to withstand wear and tear from the elements. In fact, it would have been amazing had gardeners not latched on to this material and made good use of it. Cedar has been used for well over a century as an outdoor material, both as siding on the walls of homes and even on the roof. Cedar has proven to be extremely resistant to moisture, and very hard wearing.

In recent years, the tough properties of cedar wood have become even more extreme. This is because new technology has found ways of making the wood even harder, while still retaining its softness. This softness makes cedar very easy to work, whether with machine tools or the traditional hand tools which were used for many decades in the past. The great popularity of the wood has increased, and it is now routinely used as a paneling for closets, and even indoor flooring and shoe racks. In recent years, the price of cedar has risen because of the increasing demand.

Obviously, the hard wearing nature of the wood makes it ideal to work with outside, and the ease with which it can be worked are contributory factors. The appearance of the wood cannot be overlooked, as it has a natural wood color which becomes much lighter with exposure to the elements. Used as decking it can be very striking when contrasted with the dark soil.

There is no doubt that cedar decking has an ability to weather water and wind far better than most other materials, but to last for as long as it can it needs to be maintained and looked after. Cleaning the deck twice a year, once during the spring and once during the fall, will at least make sure that any foreign deposits are removed from the wood itself. Even with the best care, cedar decking will need replacing at some point. There is no reason, however, why you cannot get a decade of good use out of it, possible double.

It is the natural wear and tear causing by the ebbing and flowing of the seasons which will eventually lead to this wood being replaced. The changing of the seasons, especially from frozen to thawed conditions, will also bring an inevitable aging. Even these factors can be significantly reduced by coating the wood with a suitable surface. Stop the water and the dirt getting to the wood, and give it some degree of protection against harshness, and it will serve you for longer. Coating the wood will let you get the most you can from your cedar decking.
